ORIENT PEARL

ORIENT PEARL

In 1994, Philippine rock band Orient Pearl released its debut album, Orient Pearl 1 on the Tone Def label of independent Ivory Records. The band features a lineup of guitar, keyboards, and bass, and is fronted by vocalist Naldy Padilla, who possesses a strong, depth-filled voice. Various session drummers were used on the album. Though not entirely cohesive, the album is full of good moments, every song presenting some enjoyment. One of the best songs is the emotive, slow-paced "Pagsubok" ("Trials"), which gained much airplay and made Orient Pearl one of the Philippines' most recognizable bands. "Pagsubok" tells of determination and courage in the face of insurmountable odds, and at least one Philippine movie star cited it as an inspiration during his own time of troubles. Another fine song is the heartfelt "Kasalanan" ("Sin"), which was cited as the best song of 1995 in the Manila Times daily newspaper. There are other fine performances on the album, including "Hangarin" ("Wish"), which grooves on a rollicking chord progression; the ambitious power ballad "Laging Sa Iyo" ("Always for You"); and "Sweet River," which glides on a '50s boogie-woogie feel, fortified by staccato piano and containing a sparkling melody sung passionately by Padilla. While the album isn't entirely polished -- the arrangements have a crude, amateurish feel at times -- the band's enthusiasm is palpable and contagious. The arrangements are mostly adventurous, often featuring searing lead guitar and warm organ (keyboards), all stirred by the forceful singing of vocalist Naldy Padilla.
